The beginning of the Great Eastern Crisis of the 1870s and the Russian society

The article is devoted to the 140th anniversary of the Great Eastern Crisis 1875-1878. With the help of the numerous archive documents and materials of central and local press which have been published since the 1950s in Russian the author analyses the development of the social movement in Russia which aim was to provide help for the Herzegovinians and Bosnians, who began a rebellion against the Turkish rule in the summer of 1875. The role of the Slavic Committee, individual activists and the Russian Orthodox Church taking part in the organization of this help is also described.
