In 1910, a new kingdom appeared in the Balkans — Montenegro. This signifi cant event was celebrated luxuriantly; it was timed to coincide with the fi ftieth anniversary of the reign of Nikola Petrovich-Negosh. Russia, a long-time patron of this Balkan country, awarded the Montenegrin ruler with the highest rank of a Field-Marshal of the Russian Army. However, the newly-made king wanted to gratify his country with new territo-ries. In secret from Saint Petersburg, he was supporting the Albanian revolt in order to add neighboring Albanian territories to Montenegro. Russian diplomats in Cetinje tried to prevent this and exercise infl uence on King’s foreign policy.
