On the Jubilee of Anatoly A. Turilov

Abstract

This article is dedicated to the anniversary of A. A. Turilov, PhD in History and a leading researcher in the Department of Medieval History at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. A. A. Turilov has worked at the Institute of Slavic Studies since 1979 and is a recognized expert in Old Russian, Serbian, and Bulgarian manuscript sources as well as material monuments, including art objects. His research has enriched Russian Slavic studies with numerous discoveries in the fields of archeography and paleography, the history of Slavic literatures, and the cultural ties between the Eastern and Southern Slavs. A. A. Turilov's research interests span both Glagolitic and Cyrillic scripts from the early Middle Ages to the end of the 17^th century. He has successfully linked numerous manuscripts from Ancient Rus' and the medieval Balkans, including those compiled on Mount Athos, to specific scribes. А.А. Turilov is the author of over 200 scholarly works, including monographs published in Russian and Serbian: “Slavia Cyrillomethodiana: Source Studies of the History and Culture of the Southern Slavs and Ancient Rus. Interslavic Cultural Ties of the Middle Ages” (Moscow, 2010); “From Cyril the Philosopher to Konstantin Kostenetsky and Vasily Sofyanin (History and Culture of the Slavs of the 9^th‒17^th Centuries)” (Moscow, 2011); “Interslavic Ties of the Middle Ages and Source Studies of the History and Culture of the Slavs: Studies and Characteristics” (Moscow, 2012); “Catalogue of Slavic Manuscripts of the Athonite Monasteries” (co-authored with L. V. Moshkova) (Beograd, 2016); “Studies in the Slavic and Serbian Middle Ages / Studije iz slovenskog i srpskog Srednjog veka” (Beograd, 2014); “Istočnici srpskog srednjeg veka” (Niš, 2020). Among other things, the scholar authored and edited a large number of articles for the almost completed edition of the “Orthodox Encyclopedia”, with the latest volume, published last year, being the seventy-fifth – this number coincided with the age of A. A. Turilov himself.
