Abstract

In 2025, as part of the annual conference of young scholars «Slavic World: Community and Diversity», held at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a new section titled «Cultural Studies» was introduced for the first time. Ten presenters from universities, academic institutes, and research centers in Moscow and Almaty (Kazakhstan) participated in its work. During the conference, a wide range of topics were discussed over two sessions. The first session focused on the cultural and national identity, as well as the reflection of nationally specific concepts in widely understood texts. Reports explored the opposition «us/them» in travel reports of N. Melnikova-Papoushkova, the image of Prague in V. Mrštík's novel «Santa Lucia» through corpus analysis, the phenomenon of kafanas as a «third place» in the urban landscape of Belgrade, and satirical graphics by L. Zahorski as examples of creolized texts. The second session was dedicated to the study of architecture, visual art, theatre, music and cinematography of Slavic countries. Participants examined A. Mucha's Slavic projects, the Piotrovich dynasty's contribution to Moscow architecture, apocalyptic imagery in A. Żuławski's film «Szamanka», K. Lupa's stage productions, P. Vladigerov's musical works, and songs from A. Michna's hymn cycles. The work of the section demonstrated the growing interest of young scholars in the study of Slavic culture and art. It emphasized the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary Slavic studies and outlined prospects for future academic dialogue.
