On May 20–21, the annual conference of young scholars, organized by the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 2014 and traditionally dedicated to the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture, was held. This time, the History section of the conference featured 40 reports (even more than in previous years) prepared by participants from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Voronezh, Rostov-on-Don, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod. Like other sections, it was also international – in this case with participants from Belarus, Serbia and China. The speakers were divided into 12 thematic subsections (moderated by the staff of the Institute): “Problems of Studying Church History”, “Symbols and the Sacred in the History of the Slavs”, “City and Society in the Early Modern Period”, “The Image of the "Other" in Russian-Polish Relations in the Early Modern Period”, “Territorial Disputes in the Balkans at the Turn of the XIX and XX Centuries”, “Views on the Place of Slavic Peoples in Europe from the XVIII to the Early XX Centuries”, “Sources, Historiography, Research Methods”, “Countries of Central and Southeastern Europe at the Present Stage of Development”, “Polish Figures in the Whirlwind of Events of the XIX Century”, “Press on the Events of the Late XIX to the Early XXI Century.”, “Problems of Slavic National Minorities in the XX Century”, “Problems of the History of Czechoslovakia and Poland in the Interwar Period”. Thus, the speakers addressed a wide range of issues in the history of the countries of Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe in various historical periods – from the Middle Ages and Early Modern times to the present day. The lively discussions that took place after most of the presentations (and are reflected in this chronicle) complemented the research prospects on the topics of the reports. A collection of abstracts will be published on the outcome of the conference.
