Abstract

The obituary lists the main stages of the professional biography of prof. G. A. Tsykhun, an outstanding Belarusian Slavist and etymologist, theorist of areal linguistics and the initiator of a number of contrastive Belarusian-Slavic studies. His achievements, main works and his contribution to Belarusian and world linguistics are assessed.

Particular attention is paid to the central areas of his scholarly activity – etymology and areal linguistics, including his works on the Balkan Language Union and his role in the creation of a multi-volume etymological dictionary of the Belarusian language. Separately, the broad spectrum of prof. Tsykhun's research and his significance for Belarusian linguistics, which thanks to him has reached a global level in many aspects, are emphasized.

The assessment of the multifaceted heritage of G. Tsykhun is complemented by a description of him as a person, which is given against the background of memories of this remarkable scholar and personality.
