Abstract

On October 17, 2024, a presentation of the first volume of the new collected works by A. N. Tolstoy took place at the A. N. Tolstoy’ Memorial Museum-Apartment on Spiridonovka. This project has been going on at the Institute of World Literature for more than 30 years. The 13 volumes of this publication will introduce the readers to the heritage of A. N. Tolstoy. This heritage consists of short stories, novellas, novels, fairy tales, plays and poems. This is part of the complete works of A. N. Tolstoy, which is supposed to be released in several series. The first volume of the 13-volume collection includes the works of A. N. Tolstoy created in 1900–1910. The main difference between this new edition and previous collected works is the scientific commentary on texts involving various sources. Researchers used previously unknown materials from the A. N. Tolstoy Foundation, which is located in the Institute of World Literature manuscript department and materials from the writer's personal library, stored in the book collections of the State Museum of the History of Russian Literature. All this have been introduced into scientific circulation. For the first time, the texts of works are critically verified by comparing all previous editions, as well as preserved typescripts and autographs. In addition, our epoch requires a new approach to the texts that have already been repeatedly published and previously commented on. This task also should be solved in a new 13-volume book. The speakers at the presentation talked about the difficulties the group faced in preparing this publication. They also explained how the concept and principles of selecting texts for publication had changed over time and how the research team had been reorganized. The participants of the presentation honored the memory of Dr. Alisa Mikhailovna Kryukova, the initiator of this project and the first head of the research group. They also noted the fruitful cooperation of the Institute of World Literature with the State Museum of the History of Russian Literature and expressed hope for strengthening and expanding this relationship.
