The scientific conference “The First World War and the 1917 Revolution in Russian Culture. On the centenary of K. Fedin's novel “Cities and Years” took place as part of the XXIX Fedin Readings in Saratov on February 28–29, 2024. The conference was hosted by the Saratov State Fedin Museum. The conference was attended by literary critics, historians and art historians of the Saratov State University, the Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the State Archive of the Russian Federation, the Moscow State University, the Vyatka State University, the State Literary Museum, the Saratov State Art Museum and, of course, the staff of the State Fedin Museum. The purpose of the conference was to explore the understanding of the First World War and the Russian Revolution in the works of art of contemporaries and to analyze the influence of literature and art of the 1920s on the history of Russian culture. The reports examined problems of the history of writing and publishing literary works and the innovation of their poetics, showed the influence of avant-garde trends on the creativity of writers of the 1920s, introduced new archival materials and ego documents from the collections of the K.A. Fedin State Museum and from the N.N. Myasoedov Foundation of the State Archive of Saratov region. Despite the century that has passed since the publication of K. A. Fedin's novel and other works analyzed by the speakers, the controversy and discussions that arose after almost every report prove that the problems raised in these works are relevant today. The wide range of participants in the conference contributed to the expansion and strengthening of ties between academic science and the museum community, and the involvement of students and postgraduates of the Saratov University stimulated the interest of young people in such events.
