Abstract

The XIII International Conference “Modern Orthodox Hymnography”, organized by the Research Center for the Church Slavonic Language Studies in the Institute of Russian Language of the Russian Academy of Sciences and held on 14th March 2024, was devoted to the translation, transliteration, commenting, textual analysis and use of textual versions of Orthodox liturgical texts. Рapers were presented by scholars who study Greek Orthodox hymnal texts and their translations into Syriac, Church Slavonic, and English. Special attention was paid to the issues of Church Slavonic literature and textual studies. The translation strategies that are found in Church Slavonic and English Orthodox liturgical texts were analyzed by Sergey Durasov and Alexandr Andreev; editing, transformation, graphic transmission of Church Slavonic texts in different historical epochs were discussed in the papers of Tatiana Afanasyeva, Irina Kornilayeva, Maria Nefiodova, Tatiana Levshenko; the creation and functioning of the original Greek hymnal genres were considered in the presentations of Alexandra Nikiforova and Oleg Rodionov. Τhe papers of Alexandr Lukashevich and Alexey Pentkovskiy were devoted to isosyllabic and equimelodic translations from Greek into Syriac and Old Slavonic, respectively. Svetlana Šašerina examined the Church Slavonic manuscript tradition of the XVII–XVIII centuries, entrenched in the Carpathians among Greek Catholics. Alexandra Pletneva and Alexandr Kravetsky reviewed prayers to the locally venerated Russian saints, which were distributed on engraved sheets long before these saints were canonized. Abbot Panteleimon (Koroliov) and Damir Petrov proposed a method for detecting similarities in hymnal texts based on Church Slavonic data.
