On the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Valery Vasilievich Ivanov

Abstract

The article is devoted to the significant date – the 100th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding scholar, veteran of the Great Patriotic War Valery Vasilyevich Ivanov, whose scientific activity had a significant impact on the development of Russian philology. The article presents an overview of the scholar’s scientific works, which made a huge contribution to the study of history and dialectology of the Russian language, to the study of modern Russian literary language and lexicography. V.V. Ivanov is the author of more than 400 scientific and educational works on the history and dialectology of the Russian language, on the modern Russian language, on the problems of studying Russian as a foreign language and as a means of interethnic communication. The significance of the first university textbook on the historical grammar of the Russian language created by V.V. Ivanov and the first description of the phonological system of the Old Russian language is pointed out. The active participation of V.V. Ivanov as the author and editor in collective academic publications on the history of the Russian language, in publications of university textbooks on the modern Russian language is noted. V.V. Ivanov was one of the editors of “Russian Grammar” in 1980, the team of its creators was awarded the USSR State Prize. The activities of V.V. Ivanov as a brilliant organizer of science, as a scholar who had enormous international scientific authority, are covered. The important role of V.V. Ivanov as the editor-in-chief of the journal “Russian Speech” and a member of the editorial board of the journal “Philological Sciences” in the matter of philological education and science communication is emphasized. The works of this outstanding scholar continue to inspire and guide a new generation of scientists along the path of further research and discovery.
