Abstract

The present paper summarises the results of a long-term research on important re- gional-comparative theme "Balkan peoples in the process of modernization: the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth centuries". In 2002–2012, in its framework, seven vol- umes of proceedings under the umbrella title "The Man in the Balkans" were published. This name became a «hallmark» and at the same time an "identification mark" of our project, marking the anthropological approach its basic methodology. As a result of ten-year work, the research team came to the following conclusion: "Behind the facade of European innovation in the form of a «standard» set of attributes of the liberal-bourgeois form of government, stable structures and skills of traditional society were hidden; those were they, which defined the way of life and behaviour, not only for a humble peasant, but for the most of the Balkan elites".
