Abstract

The article is devoted to the professionalization of the art of sculpture in Bulgaria in the late nineteenth – early twentieth centuries. The fundamental origins of Bulgarian sculpture – which are related to pan-European traditions of visual arts of the age and en- riched with the national traditions of Bulgaria – are exemplified by two outstanding sculp- tures, Andrey Nikolov and Ivan Lazarov. In the masterpieces of these artists the Bulgarian art of sculpture appears as deep in its content, revealing philosophical problems of life, and the heroism of the Bulgarian people, its resistance and optimism. Works of both sculptors show a variety of material which they were working with, their skill of using the expressive potential of each material, ability to solve specific problems of sculpture, disclose its ability to create an image of a human being.
