Figure of Taras Shevchenko and his book “Kobzar” (“The bard”) in the Polish-speaking cultural space between Kiev and Vilna until the rebellion of 1863–1864

The article considers, how the Poles, who in the 1840s–1860s were living on the vast territories of the contemporary Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania, viewed Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) and his poetic heritage. The conclusion is made that these views reflected certain political interests, which Ivan Franko described as a desire to see Ukraine as “an integral part of Poland”.
