Abstract

The article analyses the perception of Bulgaria and the Bulgarians by a participant in the Russo-Turkish war of 1877–1878, a rural dean Vakh Gurjev. His letters
from Bulgaria, addressed to his wife, are a unique and precious historical source on the country of that time, its cities, villages, folk customs, everyday and religious life.
